A Guide for Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana Exam

What is the KVPY Exam?

KVPY stands for Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana. It’s a scholarship program that receives financial backing from the Indian government and the Department of Science and Technology. The KVPY is designed to attract highly talented students who want to pursue the research avenue in various primary science fields. It started in 1999 and offers promising students undergraduate and graduate scholarships. The Indian Institute of Science (IIS) conducts this exam every year.

Selection process

Students are eligible to take up this exam if they are having an aptitude for scientific research and studying in XI standard to 1st year of any undergraduate Program for Basic Sciences i.e., B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat/B.Math/Int. M.Sc./M.S. in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. IISc screens all the applications and conducts an aptitude test at various centers in the country. Those who qualify in the aptitude test ate short-listed and called for an interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure.

How the KVPY Exam is designed

The KVPY exam consists of three streams

  • SA — Those studying in11th grade
  • SX — Those studying in 12th grade
  • SB — Those studying in the first year of college

Stream SA has Science and Mathematics. Here all questions are compulsory. In Streams SB and SX, Part 1 will carry four sections(Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics)and Part II will have four sections (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics). THREE of the four subjects in Part I have to be answered and any TWO of the four subjects in PartII have to be answered. The best of three in Part I and the best of two in Part II will be considered in case candidates attempt more sections.

Students who pass the test will therefore receive scholarships beginning from their first year of study; The funds will continue to their last year of graduate school. Qualifying students will therefore get a yearly grant of INR 60,000 for their first three years of undergraduate study. They will receive an annual contingency grant of INR 20,000 to cover living expenses.
